Wren to San Diego, “We’ll keep the kitchen sink. Thanks.”
Unless the Padres all of a sudden cave in and lower their asking price, we won’t see Peavy make his way to Atlanta any time soon…. or presumably ever.
Here’s what Wren the man himself said.
“Jake Peavy is obviously a quality top-of-the-rotation pitcher. But our
focus is still to build our organization internally with our young
players, and we had to measure at what point we’d lose the ability to
have a sustainable winning franchise going forward if we gave up too
much talent.”
“Build internally”. That’s what I like to hear.
I must say, I’m proud of Frank Wren for “just saying no” to parting with top pitching prospect Tommy Hanson who’s been showing his valor this fall, or Tyler Flowers and Jason Heyward, who bother had San Diego drooling.
Had we acquired Peavy, we would’ve most likely sent Yunel Escobar, minor leaguer Gorkys Hernandez, Blaine Boyer, and Charlie Morton west coast bound.
That’s a lot of stock. Remind you of any other trades made in recent history that cost us quite a bit in farmhands? That one didn’t pan out.
But apparently four players, one of which would leave us with a glaring vacancy at short, is not enough for a team that’s looking to completely restock in order to send Jake Atlanta bound.
My take on the would-be trade gone dead?
1) What would we have done with Yunel gone? That is the question of the month and I saw no immediate plans that made any sense. And if you say “Brent Lillibridge” then you’d have to be ok with a significant downgrade at shortstop. And landing Furcal wasn’t a real likelihood either. He’ll want a four year deal (yeah right) and has already garnered interest from several teams.
2) When you are willing to send 4 players off to get one that will pitch every five starts that’s putting a lot of eggs in one Peavy-sized basket. And if the Curse of the Braves Starters hits Jake once he comes to Atlanta… we’re out quite a bit eggs. I don’t think I could stomach another starter go down to injuries especially we had to give that much up for him.
3) If Morton, Escobar, Hernandez, Boyer, all of which could still have good careers in Atlanta, are not enough for one pitcher, why trade even more of the farm just to have an ace on the hill?
Now we can get a little more serious about one of the others free agents (Burnette, Lowe, Tazawa) out there and perhaps bring someone over that won’t cost our top prospects AND our starting shortstop.
The Padres have a high asking price for Peavy seem to think trading Jake will rebuild them in one year.
What do you think? Happy it’s over or mourning the end of the never would be Peavy-Era?
Keep choppin’
