Furcal Back with the Braves?
It’s Monday, the middle of November and JB is feeling inspired.
Perhaps this kid could walk to raise money for the Braves’ offseason spending. Or maybe I should do my own walkathon.
So even though the Peavy talks have cooled off don’t think Escobar has immunity from a trade. And so if the Braves were so easily ready to part ways with their Cuban shortstop, who did they have in mind to bring in as his replacement?
More than one rumor has surfaced about the possibility of 31 year old Furcal making a second stint with the Braves.
He’s already received a 3 year offer from one anonymous team but his agent Paul Kinzer will probably shop the stop around more since about 10 other teams have at least made interests known. And guess who’s one of them? A team the Braves match up well with.
But what are the chances of the Braves landing Furcal? I know it would make a lot of Braves fans happy to have their former ROY shortstop of 2000-2005.
First, we’d of course have to ship off Yunel by including him some package or perhaps a straight up deal. But who’s looking for a Yunel in their plans? St. Louis needs a shortstop and Ryan Ludwick may satisfy the need for a power hitting outfielder. In fact Furcal, Khalil Green, and Renteria’s names have been thrown around as potential middle infielders for St. Louis. So a trade with the Red Birds for Ludwick may make sense. So there’s an easy solution if it can be done.
Yunel gone power hitting outfielder acquired. Phase one- complete.
Then comes the effort to sign Furcal to replace the vacancy. This won’t be a given just because Rafael loves Bobby and has a home in Atlanta.
To sign Furcal however you’re looking at a few things to fall in line.
1) He’s looking for more than a three year deal. That may not happen given his age and recent back issues. Unless someone is willing to spend more to make a three year deal (which I think is what he’ll get rather than a 4-5 year contract).
2) A strong desire on Raffy’s part to come back to Atlanta. He’s not shopping with Boras but Kinzer knows a lot of teams are looking for a infielder and table setter of his caliber.
3) The Braves will have to outspend a little to get him. Since there is a market for him, he’ll test it. If the Braves become spenders they could land him. Pending of course a trade that sends Yunel elsewhere.
What do you think Braves fan? Escobar or Furcal?
